Praise for the Wilderness First Aid Class

Boy Scout Leader

Alexis A.

I was able to play back the part I had difficulty understanding. I needed it for BSA High Adventure camp, Sea Base.

Nature Therapy Guide

Gregory F.

Online sections were helpful so I could pause the videos to take better notes. Nathan was a great instructor and made everybody feel welcome while presenting material in an engaging way.

Scouts Leader

Benjamin Grizzel

Really appreciated calling out common misconceptions or dated treatment practices, and explaining WHY the guidance has changed rather than just saying that it has. I needed the course for my Philmont trek w/ Scouts BSA.

Mom and Outdoor Leader

Amber Saft

The information was very clear and well presented - well produced

Job Requirement

Aaron P.

Detailed, engaging, and comprehensive. It covered everything clearly and retained my interest, without providing additional, unnecessary information.

Personal Preparation

Keith L.

I took the wilderness first because of my "Interest and preparation." What I found really useful was the "Information on hyperthermia, OPQRST, CSM, Suggested supplies."

Over-Hydrate No Longer

Joe F.

There were a lot of myth busters in this course regarding spinal injuries, hydrogen peroxide, etc ... that I appreciated. I'm leading trips in hot environments so I'll be on the lookout for hyperthermia. Previously, I would've encouraged over-hydration.

Senior Guide

Gary K.

I just want to say you are the best instructor I have ever had for first aid. You put my mind at ease about what can and cannot be done. It is very practical and builds confidence. I like the video format too. I can go over sections more than once because it takes several times to get things into my head. Thank you

This is my 6th recertification and my first with American Outdoor School. Also my first online recertification. I learned a lot. New scenarios, a different way of looking at problems etc. I felt the material, especially the spinal injury topic, was very up to date with current practices. I wasn’t sure I would like the online approach, but it worked well. I would recommend doing a few modules a day instead of binge-watching

Wilderness First Aid Review

Stratton Tragellis

Course was well designed and easy to follow. Good addition would be padding demonstration for splits. Also how to evacuate a patient who cannot walk out.

Frequently Asked Questions

email [email protected] your questions

  • How much is the WFA certification and do you offer discounts?

The certification is $99, and you are prompted to pay at the end of the course if you decide to get it. We are delighted to work with organizations that require their employees to have a wilderness first aid certification.

  • How will I receive my certification?

You will receive a certification when you complete all requirements online. This includes passing the quizzes, submitting videos of you administering an assessment, and providing care for specified injuries.

  • Is there a time limit on the course?

There is no time limit on the course; the only time limit is if you need to acquire your wilderness first aid certification or renew your wilderness first responder by a specific date.

  • How long is the certification good for?

Your wilderness first aid certification is good for two years.

  • Does your wilderness first aid course comply with my organizations requirements?

Our Wilderness Medicine classes follow the same curriculum as NOLS, WMA, SOLO, and Scouts (BSA). Like all other organizations, we are issuing a certification, not a license. You will receive a certification card at the end of each course.

  • Can I download my certification?

Upon completing all requirements, expect a WFA certification as a printable image file.

  • Can I use this course for my WFR recert?

Absolutely. There is an additional $25 fee for administering the WFR test. Just let us know if this is for the recertification of a wilderness first responder so we can email you the test. Our email is [email protected].

  • Is their an age requirement for this class?

No. Anyone interested in the subject can take this class.

  • I think of WFA as experiential learning, how is an online course experiential learning?

If you learn best in person, please seek an in-person wilderness first aid course. The point of this course is to offer it to people who cannot make it to a class, are deterred by the costs, or require more time to learn and process the material.
